Does liver regenerate?

When we talk about the regeneration of any body organ, we think of a science fiction movie. But there is one organ in the human body that has the ability to regenerate. No science fiction, it is pure science. Studies have shown that the human liver can regenerate with as little as 25% of the original liver mass.

A liver regenerates either if a portion of the liver is surgically removed due to the presence of a tumor, numerous gallstones, or if a part of the liver is damaged due to toxicity, hepatitis, etc. It is worth mentioning that a healthy liver is also surgically removed for transplanting purpose. Such surgically treated liver also regenerates. However, it needs to be emphasized strongly that a liver damaged due to chronic alcoholism or cirrhosis cannot regenerate. It needs to be emphasized that the liver is regenerated only in terms of mass and not in its shape.
